Review of Jamie Foy’s ‘Sunshine State’ part presented by Dickies

Jamie Foy celebrates his 25th trip around the sun by dropping a part on Thrasher Magazine’s Youtube Channel on his birthday, June 14th, 2021, in collaboration with Dickies to promote his new clothing collection. Jamie, a Deerfield Beach local, skates many OG South Florida skatespots including South Miami High School, Allapattah Train Station, and the Bubier Park Stage Ledges as well as many new SoFlo spots like the Miami Science Museum rail, the newly rejuvenated North Miami Beach High School hubbas, and the Coral Way gap-to-bar which has been turned into a large handrail. Sunshine State showcases a lot of Foy’s technical skills, alongside the handrail and hubba gnarliness Jamie is known for.

My personal favorite trick in the part was Foy’s Bigflip down the Courthouse in Downtown Miami. Growing up in Miami, you hear stories of skateboarders getting maybe one try in at the Courthouse before getting kicked out or possibly arrested. It’s obvious this clip was filmed in the COVID-19 era, because Downtown Miami looks like an absolute ghost town with nobody else present at the Courthouse. The Bigflip was clean as can be, with a picture perfect flip, catch, and roll away.

The newly repurposed Coral Way gap was destroyed with two heavy handrail tricks by Foy. What was once a stairset mixed with a small gap to guardrail is now an open stairset with the guardrail knocked off and propped up as a new handrail. This spot has been featured in many tour videos, full parts, and one off parts throughout the years. Foy successfully Backside Nosebluntslide and Fakie 270 Lipslid down the facelifted spot, starting a fresh era of new tricks on an old spot.

With all the heavy tricks done down the South Miami High School handrail, Foy owned a few NBD’s prior to ‘Sunshine State’ coming out. Now, Foy can add a Backside 180 Nosegrind to Fakie as well as back to regular to that list. I remember being at the ‘Twoché’ premier at TF305 in 2016 and saw Foy Kickflip Backside 50-50 down South Miami High School, and its awesome to see Foy still skating the same spot many years later.

The last spot I’m going to talk about is the new Phillip and Patrica Frost Miami Science Museum handrail. Probably the newest spot skated in ‘Sunshine State’, the park and museum was erected sometime in 2016. The handrail is HUGE, and one of those spots that looks doable, yet next level gnarly. Sometime in 2017, I filmed a line where I ended it bombing the grass hill next to the spot. That hill seemed like a giant, near 90 degree drop off at the time, and couldn’t even imagine touching the handrail. As far as I know, Foy is the only person to do this rail. Being how new it is, the high kick out factor, and how steep it is, Foy definitely deserves some sort of plaque for deflowering this spot.

Overall, ‘Sunshine State’ in an amazing part and a great representation of South Florida skate spots. As a South Florida local, it’s nice to see spots such as North Miami Beach High School be brought back from the dead by pros like John Dilo and Jamie Foy.
