Throwback Thrasher Cover - September 2015

One of my favorite things to collect recently have been skateboarding magazines. I’ve been surfing eBay looking for cheap magazines, and buying anything in good condition. I’ve always loved browsing magazines, seeing professional photographer’s angles, techniques, and final edited photos. Its physical media, something that can theoretically last the test of time opposed to an internet article or video which one day may be deleted. Unfortunately, physical media is dying out in skateboarding. Magazines are dying left and right, videos are now posted straight to the internet with zero intention of bringing it to DVD or Blu-Ray, and websites and Instagram are taking over the skateboard world. I now feel differently about skateboarding magazines than I did ten years ago. I feel like they should be much more appreciated, both past and future issues, because one day we may not have them anymore.

With that being said, I’m going to do a Throwback Magazine Cover review every couple of days or so. I’ve recently bought my favorite cover of all time. Thrasher Magazine’s September 2015 cover featuring Raven Tershy’s Backside Tailslide on the Oververt at FDR Skatepark in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from the video Lakai’s ‘The Flare’. This was a two cover month, with Justin Figueroa taking the other. These magazines were highlighted by Lakai’s and Emerica’s joint tour, Stay Flared, that featured team riders from both ‘Stay Gold’ and ‘Fully Flared’ as well as newer team riders. Raven’s cover was shot by Ben Colen, and was Raven’s second Thrasher cover ever. The first cover was part of a five cover series in January 2013, featuring a cover for all the Trunk Boyz to highlight Pretty Sweet’s recent release. Below is the raw footage for Raven’s ‘The Flare’ part where the Backside Tailslide is featured. Luckily it’s the first trick after the opening theme.
