Final Olympic Skateboarding team rosters announced for Tokyo 2020
The final rosters for the Olympics’ inaugural skateboarding contests have been announced for Tokyo’s 2020 games, which will be held July through August of 2021 to make up for last year’s cancellations due to COVID-19. 80 skateboarders total, 40 men & 40 women from 26 different countries were chosen to compete this summer in both street and park disciplines. Brazil & United States have the most participants total, both 12 skateboarders total competing, three in each event, with host country Japan coming in third with ten participants. The Olympic skateboarding games are highlighted by many powerhouses such as legends like Rune Glifburg & Alexis Sablone while including many new school talents such as Pedro Barros, Zion Wright, Leticia Bufoni, & Sky Brown. Though I do not think these contests have the best possible participants on the planet, I do really like those chosen and I think the competition will be up to par for Olympic standards. Congratulations and best of luck to all skateboarders chosen to represent their countries. When skateboarding was first announced in the Olympics, I thought it was stupid and a cash grab using skateboarders like many other large scale companies do nowadays. However after thinking more about it, this will introduce many around the world to this amazing sport of ours, and could possibly further the sport by changing people’s perceptions and misconceptions about the sport and skateboarders in general. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to meet 25 total participants and photograph many of them as well. Featured below are a couple of my favorite photos I’ve taken.
